A lot of people do not like tofu. I would guess that a good portion of the people who do not like it have never had pressed tofu. In my opinion, anything fried in oil tastes great – but in order to get that crispy texture you must PRESS the sponge that is tofu. Try out this simple recipe below, and play around with the seasonings. You can have a spicier tofu if you decide to add more cayenne or pepper flakes.
- Block of FIRM tofu
- Garlic Powder
- Coconut Oil
- Cayenne Pepper
You will Need:
2 dish towels and some paper towels
2 heavy books
What to do:
Take out your block of tofu and place on a towel on top of a plate.
Use a layer of paper towels and then another towel over the top of the tofu block.
Place two heavy books or any heavy object you want to put on the counter top, and lay on top of the towel covered tofu.
Leave pressed for at least 2 hours – the longer the better.
Change out the towel every hour or so to keep as much moisture out of the tofu.
Once dried out, cut your tofu into small cubes. Season and place in a heated pan with coconut oil (or olive oil, your choice).
Cook on each side for 2-3 minutes or until each side has a crispy finish.
Serve warm and enjoy alone or over a salad or any greens!
